Keep that hand drawing them lines

Hectical days and evenings. Sneak peeks:
Part from an illo for Origo:

Excerpt from a comic strip illustrating a text by Vanja Hermele in the fortcoming issue of Bang magazine. Do you recognize the man?

And then there's the cover for Ful in progress — it'll be astonishing, splendid, outrageous. I won't publish any drafts, though they're burning in my pocket.

Chemistry in process and night at work

Concerning the fact that ¼ of the Swedish 9th grade students fail the national chemistry examination. In the first draft you can see that I hastily had interpreted the text the other way around — ¾ failing students is indeed a disheartening result.

I'm also making a fast ad for Ful's podcasts:

Will be experimenting more with hand writing further on. No there's some serious reading that I have to do for another two illos — and some thinking about the cover of the forthcoming issue of Ful.

Blog drought

A hectic period has (almost) come to an end. The editorial work with Ful magazine has been overwhelming but what now remains is for me to illustrate the cover! A big thank you to all skilled and smart illustrators and photographers that have been helping us to make the magazine even sharper, better and more good looking than it used to be! Keep your eyes open for the big release party in Stockholm, Dec 12.

Another work that will be celebrated with a release party is the book I made for Swedish glass artist Åsa Jungnelius. More info coming soon! Meanwhile you can spend 3 minutes in her company here:

I'm off the see the new exhibition at Gustavsbergs konsthall!

Hi Ful!

I'm proud to announce that I'll be on the editorial staff — as pictorial editor — of Sweden's foremost queer periodical Ful. The last year I've been doing their cover illustrations and I'm very excited about finally being a part of the interior... Wish me luck!

Summer in short:

A fantastic month as an artist in residence at the LoBot Gallery in Oakland has come to an end. Thank you all! What's next? I'll be working on a book and my Mona Lisa print is to be exhibited at the Symposium for graphic art in Sweden and Finland at Hanaholmen, Finland.
Below, a few photos from my stay in the US. My first print in progress (note the amazing studio!):

Copies

Copying the work of others is 'forbidden' — but referring to other people's art work is considered okay (as it may be part of a dialogue and fills other functions than a mere copy?).

When I was a student at Konstfack I remember seeing Björn Kjelltoft's imitation of Swedish glass artist Ulrica Hydman-Vallien exhibited in the school building — he had painted some PET bottles in Hydman-Vallien's significant style. I laughed to myself and thought it was a brilliant idea! Ulrica Hydman-Vallien replied by making an imitation of Kjelltoft's imitation of her. I found that unneccessary though.
When I make copies of something it might be for other reasons than to communicate with another artist or to question anything. I've made some stuff through the years, not all documented. Here's a selection of things I've copied:

I went to see a show of Marie-Louise Ekman last year. I love her paintings but could probably never afford to buy one, so I bought some canvas and paint and copied this one. I even liked my copy better than the original.

I really like the pattern work by the Swedish designers 10-gruppen. Last year I bought some second-quality plates from them and when I found some white china plates in the garbage I started dreaming of painting them. So I did.

On my copy list right now: a white denim jacket with 'Keith Harring pattern' from a pricy NY shop. Photos are taken, all that's missing is a good jacket.

Illustration in practice?

When I first started blogging in 2006 I wanted to create a blog which included both the theory and the practice of my profession, hence the former title 'Theory and Practice'. Through the years the theoretical and the philosophical parts have been left behind — at least in terms of being presented in this blog — and I find myself just posting process pics to it. I've decided to accept this fact and adapt to it, thus the new name, url and the semi-new look! This does of course not stop me from writing about illustration in a deeper level — when I feel like it again. Stay tuned!

PS. When importing my blog to blogger (don't ever try it at home!) all the comments were lost. So fill in the comment fields for me again, will you.

PS. Enciclopedia #0

I'm participating with my 'mountain piece' in an awesome silk screen printed magazine, Enciclopedia #0. I got a copy the other week and it has lots of nice illustration work in it (Ian Stevenson, Renaud Perrin, Leeza Hooper, just to mention some). Go get it! Enciclopedia is sold in Italy and Spain — and I suppose that it'll be available for sale online soon.

Dance in progress — and hey! whatever happened to Dalí's soft watches? Time for recycling.

Lisa Jonasson

Some weeks ago I went to see some of Lisa Jonasson's paper cut work and drawings in Uppsala. It doesn't make sense for me to describe them, have a look here instead. I really, really liked it! The picture above is from 'L'art en Europe' at Domaine Pommery, Reims, France.

Emma Åkerman + Tabaimo

When in Stockholm, don't miss out Emma's exhibition. Delicate drawings! Crystal Palace, February 14 – March 15.

Another 'must-see-exhibition' is Japanese artist Tabaimo, shown at Moderna museet until 19 April. Three amazingly odd animations. Read about it here.

Taking Risks to End Pregnancy

I was commissioned to illustrate 'letters to the editor' commenting an article about the abortion choices for poor women, in this particular case: women inducing abortion with prescription drugs. The first no-no was to draw a pregnant woman. The second to have a vague idea (as in the risktaker above). Yes to a not-obviously-pregnant woman passing the clinic with a bag from the RX store. Published in the NY Times today.
